Narrative Risk Communication as a <i>Lingua Franca</i> for Environmental Hazard Preparation

Incorporating narrative elements into risk communication may encourage preparation for environmental hazards in ways that scientific language alone does not. We integrate theory, persuasion, and theories a Narrative Risk Communication Framework then assess the effectiveness of character selection as mechanism compared to conventional science messaging alone. utilize survey experiment with residents along flood-prone Yellowstone River Montana analyze resulting data parallel serial mediation statistical model. find positive affective response mediates influence narratives featuring hero language. Positive appears overcome perception paradox both by circumventing rational analysis shaping perception. Overall, results suggest inspirational is superior fear or victimization encouraging – an important lesson practitioners working help citizens prepare disasters.
